Tanner Boser on Cups at UFC Edmonton

A cup malfunction became part of the story of Tanner Boser's win over Jhonata Diniz at UFC Edmonton. His response afterward put Diamond MMA groin protection in the spotlight.

A stoppage Boser didn't want

According to Cageside Press, Diniz's cup came off during the fight, and he was given extra time to fix it. Boser was frustrated. In his view, the break handed a tired opponent time to recover.

At the post-fight press conference, he didn't soften it: "Get a different cup." He went on to recommend a Diamond MMA cup and said fighters black out the branding with a marker.

Boser finished Diniz by TKO at 4:26 of the third round, the first win for a Canadian fighter on the card.

Why groin protection belongs in your preparation

You prepare your conditioning, your technique and your game plan. Your protective gear deserves the same attention. One equipment problem can stop a fight and pull the focus off the work.

Make groin protection part of your training setup, not a fight-night afterthought. Check the fit. Inspect your gear. Train in what you compete in, so you know it holds before you step onto the mat or into the cage.

How Diamond MMA keeps protection in place

Diamond MMA's shift-proof quad strap design uses four strategically placed straps to hold the cup snug against the body. The cup stays centered while you shoot, sprawl and scramble. The cup itself is a hard cup: a polycarbonate shell with a rubber elastomer rim, shaped to help deflect and spread the force of a hit.

Two systems pair the jock with the cup for combat sports:

The goal is simple: protection that stays where it belongs, so you can think about the fight instead of your gear.

Boser's comments put that idea in front of a post-fight microphone. The takeaway for athletes is just as simple. Give your groin protection the same attention you give the rest of your equipment.
