Diamond MMA: Why Every Umpire Needs An Athletic Cup
One Foul Ball From Disaster: Why Every Umpire Needs a Cup

In Game 1 of the White Sox–Astros Wild Card Series on September 29, a foul ball deflected off the bat, bounced behind the plate, and hit home plate umpire Alex MacKay in the groin. He doubled over, got checked by medical staff, and finished the game.

MLB requires umpires to wear protective gear. But coverage of the incident couldn't confirm whether MacKay had a cup on. If that's a question at the highest level of the sport, it's a bigger one at youth fields, high school games, and rec leagues, where officials often skip the cup because it's uncomfortable or they assume they won't need it.

Why it matters
Umpires and referees stand in the line of fire every game. A groin hit can mean serious injury and a trip to the ER, not just a few seconds of pain. Protective gear only works if you're actually wearing it.

What to wear
A real cup should have:
• A hard polycarbonate shell that spreads the force of impact
• A rubber elastomer rim that cushions the hit
• A secure fit so it stays in place through every crouch and lunge

Diamond MMA cup systems are built exactly this way, for officials who can't afford to take one off the bat.
