The Science Behind Groin Shots, and Why They Can Severely Damage Fighter Performance

When a fighter receives a groin shot, it is usually not the pain inflicted on the penis, rather the testicles which brings the fighter to his knees.  The testicles are heavily innervated and when they receive blunt force trauma, a parasympathetic response is triggered which causes a visceral pain and sometimes the feeling of nausea. A severe blow to the groin or likewise to the kidneys or liver can cause blood vessels to dilate and a drop in heart rate.  This decreased blood flow can cause one to pass out.  Inevitably, even if one does not lose consciousness, people lose their ability to stay upright.  Other common symptoms from groin shots are dizziness and higher body temperature.  If there is enough damage, the testicle can rupture or swell so great that it impedes blood flow which leads to a surgical emergency.

This Week in Diamond: Ovince St. Preux steps in on short notice against Shogun Rua

With no UFC event scheduled this weekend, the world's leading MMA promotion put together an enticing doubleheader next weekend featuring a bevy of intriguing bouts.

The second event, UFC Fight Night 56, was set to be headlined by former UFC Light Heavyweight champion Mauricio "Shogun" Rua taking on rising contender Jimi Manuwa down in Uberlandia, Brazil.

Unfortunately, a broken foot forced Manuwa to withdraw from the fight just over a week before the scheduled bout. With the event hanging in the balance, the UFC asked Ovince St. Preux to step up on just a weeks' notice to take on Shogun.

UFC 179 Fighter Feature

After a three-week sabbatical, the UFC returns with the exciting UFC 179 pay-per-view card live from Brazil featuring the Featherweight title fight between Diamond MMA supporter Chad “Money” Mendes and Jose Aldo.

Of course “Money” isn’t the only fighter in Brazil sporting Diamond MMA on fight night. No. 13 ranked Featherweight Darren Elkins, who takes on Lucas Martins on the pay-per-view main card, will be protecting his nuts with Diamond as well!
